Are consumers getting more stressed?
Steven Boal, CEO Of Coupons.com, thinks they are. Despite reports of rising consumer confidence, factors such as rapidly increasing gasoline prices and high unemployment are continuing to put pressure on consumers, according to Boal.

“Consumers are still feeling the pinch, from our view,” Boal says.

Want more proof? Use of digital coupons surged from April to May, according to ComScore reports. What’s more, June looks to be shaping up to show another solid month of growth for Coupons.com, the leading digital coupon Web site, Boal says.

Digital coupon Web sites saw the largest increase in unique visitors, a key measure of Internet traffic, from April to May of any Web site category, says Andrew Lipsman, director of Industry Analysis at ComScore.

The growth in unique visitors at Coupons.com rose 85 percent during that period, solidly outpacing the 19 percent growth in the overall category, according to ComScore.

It’s notable, that at the same time, online commerce weakened, Lipsman says. Since the start of this year, sales of products online had been basically been flat with year ago levels, but the value of those purchases in May fell from a year ago, according to ComScore data.

Do you have a marketing budget set aside to promote your small business each year? 

Marketing experts typically recommend that you reserve as much as 10% of your small business’ gross sales for marketing. That includes advertising such as online coupons, promotions, direct mail, giveaways like magnets and such, promotional signage, and so on. The question is whether or not 10% is realistic for your small business or not.

There are several factors to consider when determining your annual marketing budget:

FIRST,  the amount of money you spend on marketing should be directly related to the growth stage of your business. Is your business still in its infancy, or is your business mature and well-known? The stage of your business certainly impacts how much money you need to spend to promote it. What industry does your business operate in? Different industries require varying marketing investments to remain competitive. On that note, what are your competitors doing? It’s important to maintain a level playing field at the very least. 

Marketing experts generally advise, on average, that NEW BUSINESSES spend 10% on advertising and marketing the first year. After the first year , ad budgets should be around 5% of gross sales, on average. The 5% figure should be maintained indefinitely, even in good times. In slow, recessionary times as we’re in now, advertising should be maintained, if not increased, according to experts. Many make the mistake of cutting back on advertising when business is slow, only to see business drop further. Recessions are actually a good time to advertise when competition is NOT advertising, thus, resulting in a stronger share of the market. In a recent survey, over 50% of small busineess advertisers said they plan to spend the same or more on the following: ONLINE ADVERTISING (including Coupons) – 69%, DIRECT MAIL (including Coupons) – 51%

SECOND,  you need to plan what new products, services or enhancements you’ll introduce to your small business in the upcoming year. Naturally, if you’re launching a new product, you’ll need to invest enough in the marketing of that product to raise awareness and recognition of it. 

THIRD,   you need to determine what business goals you have set. If you want to grow your business by a certain amount within the next year, you need to invest enough money in promotional efforts to help you get there.

Bottom-line, you should invest 5%-10% of your gross sales into your marketing budget. Make a plan and stick to it. Set aside a bit of your budget for opportunities that might arise throughout the year. Most importantly, use your marketing budget. It might sound like a great idea to hold onto that money during these slow times but just the opposite is true. Advertising can and will bring in that missing business and set you apart from your competition, which is NOT advertising.

IN TERMS of efficiency, if not size, the advertising industry is only now starting to grow out of its century-long infancy, which might be called “the Wanamaker era”. It was John Wanamaker, a devoutly Christian merchant from Philadelphia, who in the 1870s not only invented department stores and price tags (to eliminate haggling, since everybody should be equal before God and price), but also became the first modern advertiser when he bought space in newspapers to promote his stores. He went about it in a Christian way, neither advertising on Sundays nor fibbing (thus minting the concept of “truth in advertising”). And, with his precise business mind, he expounded a witticism that has ever since seemed like an economic law: “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted,” he said. “The trouble is, I don’t know which half.”

Wanamaker’s wasted half is not entirely proverbial. The worldwide advertising industry is likely to be worth $428 billion in revenues this year, according to ZenithOptimedia, a market-research firm. Greg Stuart, the author of a forthcoming book on the industry and the boss of the Interactive Advertising Bureau, a trade association, estimates that advertisers waste—that is, they send messages that reach the wrong audience or none at all—$112 billion a year in America and $220 billion worldwide, or just over half of their total spending. Wanamaker was remarkably accurate.

Consumer-wise, according to comScore Media Metrix, coupon sites were the fastest-growing online category in November 2008, up 32 percent from October to 35.6 million visitors. comScore’s “State of the US Online Retail Economy: Q3 2008″ report said that 62 percent of responding U.S. consumers who decreased their shopping expenses in October 2008 were using coupons more often to do so..

BUSINESS:  26% of Small Business plan to spend more on advertising in 2009 – especially online – and another 60% plan to spend about the same as in 2008, according to a report from Ad-ology Research (October , 2008), this despite lower ad budgets and 97% of business owners having ‘some degree of concern’ about today’s dismal economy.

CONSUMERS:  A recent survey by Nomensa found that 36 percent of people plan to spend more money online this year and 89 percent of respondents believe better prices can be found online.

Business-wise, in terms of 2009 spending on various media types, more than half of small business advertisers plan to spend the same or more on the following: Online advertising (69%), Yellow Pages (54%), direct mail (51%) and newspapers (51%) according to the Ad-ology study. Broken down by specific media, 44% of respondents ranked online advertising as most effective, followed by direct mail (32%). Yellow Pages and newspapers, which were once advertising leaders , dropped to 28% and 27% , respectfully, in popularity. 

Despite plans to increase spending in some areas, the research also reveals that small-business owners are increasingly questioning whether mass media advertising (newpapers, yellow pages, TV , radio, etc.) effectively reaches their desired audience. These advertisers understand the importance of being top-of mind with their customers, and they agree that advertising plays a crucial role in the future of their businesses .

The biggest factors for small-business owners in making the decision to select specific advertising vehicles are rates (50%), proximity to business prospects (48%) anddoing what the company has always done (41%).
